Hills, valleys and the western weather.
NIWA describes the Waitākere Ranges as rising to 480 m and Auckland’s west coast as exposed to prevailing southwesterlies. That regional setting makes slope and exposure useful starting points for a tree care conversation, although a sheltered suburban section can have very different conditions.
NIWA: The climate and weather of AucklandHenderson-Massey tree canopy cover
Council’s revised 2021 report recorded 15% canopy cover in Henderson-Massey using 2016 to 2018 data. This urban local board figure does not describe forest cover throughout the Waitākere Ranges.

What adverse weather means for your trees.
For a tree on a slope, describe any recent ground movement, drainage changes or nearby earthworks. Keep clear of a suspect tree or unstable bank. A tree assessment may need to be coordinated with advice about the ground itself; tree pruning is not a remedy for an unstable slope.
Saturated ground can undermine tree stability, and damaged branches can fall after a storm has passed.

Why thoughtful pruning matters.
Council recommends removing damaged or diseased limbs as part of regular storm preparation, before severe weather is forecast.
Auckland Council: Preparing trees before a stormA bush-edge garden benefits from a clear plan for the trees close to the house and access routes. Discuss which branches need attention and which trees provide valued screening. Avoid treating every tree on a slope as a removal candidate. The suitable approach depends on its condition, surroundings and any protection rules.
Check protected status and consent requirements before work. Protected trees can have restrictions on pruning as well as removal.
